Open Beta: Quick Launch Gadget

Posted in Gadgets, Quick Launch

We’ve been working overtime on our latest gadget to get it working. Introducing the Quick Launch gadget! An incredibly useful gadget that allows a user to add shorcuts, folders, and files to the sidebar for quick access and perusal. Kind of like a really nice version of the system Quick Launch, but with a lot more options. In any case, we have been exterminating the major bugs in the gadget for the past few days and decided to open it up to everyone in limited beta in case there are any more bugs to work out before launch.

The Quick Launch gadget basically appears to be fully functional and working on Vista SP1 64-bit Business.

I would like to see the Manage gear moved to a new tab on the configurations/settings page instead of taking up valuable space on visible sidebar. Once the gadget shortcuts are user-configured, the Manage gear will be seldom used.

Another nice option would be to display smaller icon sizes so that more shortcuts can be configured in “less” space.

Other than the above comments/suggestions, the gadget is excellent.

I have a very old program DEJAWINT.exe which works fine. I can start it from the Start bar, by clicking it or setting up an shortcut.
However when i put it on the gadget i get a security warning Unidentified program wants access to your computer.
This occurs every time ever after i have allowed it to run.

  3. The Staff Says:

Ernie, it’s probably the sidebar projecting it’s security onto the program. Not sure why or how to remove the warning, but odds are it has something to do with the execute command.

I like it so far under windows 7.

The only problem is there is no way to show text (i’m sure that defeats the purpose).

It would be nice to add a tag to an icon or at least add text to a separator.

I use 4 versions of a program (and they haven’t found it important enough to change the ICON in years), this makes it hard to keep track of which is which.

Until then, I’ll just have to create custome icons for them, but text would be nice even if it is only 1 letter.

to be added to the above post. Perhaps make the title customizable.

This way when you mouse over the Icon it will show your inputted tag.

  6. The Staff Says:

Hyperanim8or, thanks for the suggestions. They are definitely on the list in terms of future upgrades, it’s just a matter of getting the gadget to be a bit more stable and then add these features in. We originally had to pull a few of these things for time when we launched but now we’re in a position to go back and add some of the features back in.

I actually love the gadget, I’m using it under Windows 7 64bit, however every so often when I add a shortcut to the gadget it will implode with all the icons appearing in 2 rows then lose the icons all together. Is this a compatibility issue with 64 bit operating systems?

  8. The Staff Says:

Hi HandyAndy, Thanks for making us aware of this problem. We will do some testing to see if we can narrow down the source of this problem. We will post with what we come up with.

  9. The Staff Says:

HandyAndy, We have looked more closely at this problem and it looks like something that is going to take more than just a quick patch. We have it noted in our list and will address the next time we do an upgrade. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I having trouble with my Quick Launch gadget. I’ve tried restarting sidebar, re-booting computer & re-installing the gadget. I tried to delete before & after I re-installed it gut no response.

After re-installing it the 2 apps were still on the Quick launch & I still couldn’t delete them off gadget. I still can’t add anything to it either.

  11. The Staff Says:

Brenda, try removing the .xml data files for a full reset. Gadget Settings -> Help -> Bottom instructions.
