WoW Explorer 1.0

Posted in Gadgets, WoW Explorer

We’ve had this gadget in development for a little while and thought today was a good day to get it out there. If you play World of Warcraft and use the sidebar, this gadget should come in very handy. It’s a combination search / site viewer with a US realm status checker. It’s small, powerful, easy to use, and comes with a handful of pretty themes.

Please let us know if you run into any bug or have any suggestions, thoughts, or requests. :)

P.S.: In case anyone was wondering why we haven’t added the EU realms: WoW Europe discontinued their server feed. Should this gadget prove to be popular, we may go back and see what we can do to add them in.

If you ever plan on updating it, it might be a good idea to make it possible to add whatever sight you want to search instead of the supplied list, because i use WoWWiki more than any on the list

  2. Wagg Says:

Hello i was looking in ur gadget and i can not see a opition for seeing the EU servers so may be good to add that next time u updatde it

  3. The Staff Says:

Wagg, It’s something we might look into for a future release. Currently, WoW Europe isn’t offering a specific XML feed for their server status.

  4. Wagg Says:

ok, hope blizz will add the XML feed for the EU server

  5. Velcrobelly Says:

After the gadget opens its own web browser to show the results, why does it need to open a separate browser when you click a link on the page that was just opened?

  6. The Staff Says:

Velcrobelly, Sadly it’s part of the way the sidebar handles iFrames (This is not standard behavior for an iFrame, we’re guessing Microsoft did this for security and liability reasons). We’re looking into alternatives, though they seem to be quite complicated to build and implement so far. If we find an alternative browser object or find a better to display the sites, we’ll implement it in future versions.

hey great work on this program but i mainly play on the oceanic realms so i was woundering if that could be added? and how do i get rid of a relm out of the list i made for the ones i play on? thank you heaps in advance

  8. The Staff Says:

Johnbon, We’ll consider adding in the Oceanic realms if we can find a good feed for them. Deleting realms out of the “My Realms” list is pretty simple, just open the realms flyout, click the lock button to unlock the list and click the X button on any realm you want to delete. The deleted realm will go back to the full realms list in the other tab.

Edit: Didn’t realize Blizzard lumped oceanic realms in with the North American ones on the realm status page. Would definetely explain why we couldn’t find a dedicated listing page though. Did you just want a filter for the Oceanic realms?

  9. Idril Says:

Hey I really love your gadget but I noticed that whenever I try to search something on WoWCurse, it searches WoWDB instead. Any suggestions as to how to fix this? Thanks.

  10. The Staff Says:

Idril, sorry about that, our fault. Just patched the gadget with the correct URL, go ahead and re-download it off the site and the Curse Addons search should work properly.

  11. Idril Says:

    Wow, thanks guys, you’re great!

  12. Norumu Says:

I’m with the first comment, actually. I would have much, much more love for this gadget if it had WoWWiki in the search list.

  13. The Staff Says:

Norumu, wish granted! Re-download the gadget and it should have WoWWiki in the search list. Someday we’ll put in some options to help add and maintain a custom search list. Baby steps.

  14. Dirtyd Says:

Maybe someone can do it for German Realms? :/

  15. The Staff Says:

Dirtyd, WoW Europe is on the list for future upgrades. If we had an XML list to work off from it would have been in there from the start, so blame Blizzard for making things hard. With any luck though, the next major upgrade to the gadget will include a region selector for EU.

  16. Moon Says:

Can this be modified for Win XP Yahoo Widgets ?? Im useing it now, and loveing the fetures, in the Win7 Beta install on another computer but want to use this on my main box.

  17. The Staff Says:

Moon, maybe someday we’ll be able to port it to other platforms. For the moment, we’re focused on perfecting the features on Vista / 7.

  18. DE94 Says:

Just a suggestion to add a site for the search. Everyone i know uses WoW Heroes if it can be somehow added that would be great.

  19. Chris Says:

    Hey guys!

This is by far the best idea for a gadget I’ve seen since I starting using them in October. Thanks for putting the effort in.

I’ve read in the comments that you want to perfect the Vista/7 implementation before considering development for another platform. When you reach that point, would you consider porting WoW Explorer to Google Gadget? (I seriously considered switching to the Vista sidebar just for WoW Explorer, but GG’s compatibility with Gmail and Google Calendar are just too useful.)

  20. Chris Says:

Let me clarify a bit – I want to use WoW Explorer with the Google Desktop Sidebar. (If it was as simple as using Amnesty Generator to convert my Google Desktop Sidebar Gadgets to Vista Windows Sidebar Gadgets, I would do that, but Amnesty Generator only works with things that go on a website.)

  21. Chris Says:

(Cheers to Google for calling everything a Gadget)

  22. Bertrand Says:

Couldn’t http://www.wow-europe.com/realmstatus/index.xml be used for realm status ?

  23. The Staff Says:

Bertrand, indeed it could be. Thank you for the link, we didn’t even know that existed. Wonder why WoW Europe doesn’t link the feed into their site?

  24. electrocit Says:

Is there a way to make the search window open on the right and not the left? my side bar is on the right hand side of my screen so the window opens to negative space making it useless. the only way it works for me now is to make it open a new window.

  25. The Staff Says:

Electocit, Unfortunately, the sidebar determines which side the flyout opens. There are no known ways to control that. Sorry.

  26. David Says:

It would be a good idea to add wow-heroes.com to the search bar considering a lot of servers are using it nowadays.

  27. The Staff Says:

David, it’s possible this will be in a future update as long as it plays well with the flyout.
