Facebook Explorer 1.0.4

Posted in Facebook Explorer

Since this gadget came out there have been a group of users who have had trouble getting the login code to work on the gadget. After going through everything we could, we released the 1.0.3 version of the gadget to get additional information and here is what we found:

Almost every login code error we received was a 100 – Missing Parameter error. This means that the code isn’t being sent into Facebook either properly or at all. With that in mind, we have a new version of the gadget designed to circumvent the current system to hopefully provide the code straight from the user input to the gadget to Facebook without involving the sidebar API too much.

In laymen terms, we think we fixed it.

Also in this update the Facebook logo on top of the gadget is now clickable and links directly to facebook.com.

Great work. I was wondering if you could make the Gadget Height for Tallest the entire screen height?

I like to have the gadget undocked on my second monitor and I would like to utilize the full screen real estate.

  2. Krista Says:

When I use the “wide” setting, it doesn’t fit on my sidebar. You should fix this and you should also allow us to update the gadget every minute. I was wondering why I wasn’t seeing updates and then I noticed it defaults to 20 minutes. Also, I would love to be able to do more in the flyout, like comment.

Other than these points, I LOVE this gadget. Keep up the great work!!!

  3. The Staff Says:

Hoahoo, We’ll look into additional height sizes, though it might get constrained by the sidebar in terms of performance.

  4. The Staff Says:

Krista, Not sure if we can fix the wide settings not fitting on the sidebar as it’s more of a spatial matter than a programming one. We might add in some controls to bring the update period to about a minute at some point, we didn’t want to stress out the Facebook servers too much on our first run. Commenting and additional message options in the flyout are slated for future upgrades.

  5. Joanna Says:

Overall, its very good. Maybe it could be better if I was able to comment/reply/like the things I see on my friend’s activity list? But still very good.

  6. antuan Says:

i just need someone to help me.. i want my gadget to stay logged in facebook forever.. i dont want to be gtting everyday a new code… !! please help!!!!

  7. The Staff Says:

Antuan, we’re going through the problems with the Facebook gadget and this one has cropped up a couple times. The deal is that the info isn’t getting saved properly into the local file. Not sure, but this may have more to do with your sidebar than with the gadget, but so far we haven’t been able to replicate the issue here.

Go into the gadget settings -> Help -> click the link on the bottom and open up the data file. Open the Facebook-Explorer-Data.xml file in the browser and see if the code is in there. If it’s not, the gadget isn’t saving it, if it is, the gadget might not be sending it when it gets initialized. If that’s the case, you can try re-adding it to the sidebar or restarting the sidebar itself (right-click the icon in the lower right hand side, select “Exit” and then go to Start -> “Windows Sidebar”). We’re working through the problems, but so far we only have a little bit of data to work from without seeing the problem face to face.

  8. aneil Says:

The facebook Gadget is nice. A suggested improvement is to allow flyout on mouse over, so normally the gadget is narrow but on mousover it is wide while clicking on a header or something causes the header to stay in wide and clicking again changes it back to narrow or some sort of quick change to wide and narrow views.

  9. help Says:

when I enter a code, it’s still invalid. help.

  10. Krista Says:

My gadget shows version # 1.0.5. Why don’t you post here when you release an update?

  11. The Staff Says:

Krista, the 1.0.5 version was a very minor update for the scrollbar. In the future we’ll try to post more on the blog, but we didn’t figure that such a small change warranted a full blog post at the time.

  12. denny Says:

i clcik to change the staus and it bbrings upa box to change it..it says clcik here…but clcik does nada…and help?

  13. denny Says:

ok i set something in the force flyout focus and that seemed to fix my issues

however any chance of getting this to show chats???just inside that window like friends..but show someone is chatting you..u clcik it and them click the friend that is chatting you..but keep it a small window

  14. Codie Says:

I think chat should be added. Good Gad. either way

  15. The Staff Says:

jovana, we’re still sorting through why this is happening to some people. Just make sure you have the latest version and try restarting the sidebar application itself.

  16. The Staff Says:

Denny, chat is a feature we’re reserving for down the line. If it’s available in the Facebook API, we’ll see if we can integrate it into a future update.

  17. The Staff Says:

Codie, thanks. Chat is up in the air depending on it’s availability. We’re going to look into it.

  18. Peter Says:

I enter the code and the app responds invalid code. I’ve tried regenerating, I’ve tried deleting the xml and nothing works.

  19. The Staff Says:

Peter, we’re still working on why this is happening to people. The weird thing is that it’s not happening to everyone, just a select few people. This might be due to the way the gadget is coded or possibly some sort of communications error on the sidebar, we’re going to keep patching this gadget until we figure out what.

  20. Roger Says:

Great gadget, the only thing i’d like is to be able to filter the displayed status updates (same as in my main webpage)

  21. Toby Says:

Is there a way for this gadget to follow who has been hidden on my home page, because although I have hidden people on Facebook, their posts still appear in the gadget, which is annoying!

  22. The Staff Says:

Toby, we’re looking into it. Facebook should be sending in the correct feed, but we guess they may have just not bothered with the filtering system (yet). We’ll check the API to see if there’s anything new developing or if there’s a way to send in a filter list of user ID’s to exclude. Past that, we may have to build in an on-gadget filtering system to handle users and maybe app spam.

  23. Lindsay Says:

Hi, I’m getting stuff in my activity from applications that I’ve never installed. For example, right now I see a Pet Pupz, Polls, Hatchlings, Farmville, and YoVille notice, none of which I currently have installed as applications or set as fans, and I’m positive I’ve never installed them, either. Any reason why I see them? Otherwise I love the app!

  24. The Staff Says:

Lindsay, the activity is coming from apps your friends have installed. We’re working on a way to get the filter settings to work on the feed so that it will resemble what’s on the home page.

  25. Alex Cornelio Says:

ok i went throught all of the info on this site deleated and reloaded side bar re loaded facebook gadget reg code still invalid went to xml doc and the code is not there. is there a way to edit that doc manualy or is there any othe option i can try. it works fine on my desktop computer and would love to get it on my laptop.

  26. The Staff Says:

Alex, try removing that file and re-adding the gadget. Past that, it can be edited manually if you want to try it, just preface the code with a (X) and try it out. We’re still trying to figure out why some people’s computers get the invalid code issue.

  27. leQ Says:

my widget isn’t updating. it’s been like this for the last 3 days now. maybe more. wassup with that? i’ve tried all the kink-outs listed on your support page, but it didn’t help matters. what else can i do to make my favorite widget work?

  28. The Staff Says:

leQ, try restarting the sidebar application, if you’ve done that, delete the user data file by going to Gadget Settings -> Help -> Follow the instructions on the bottom. Once you’ve re-added the gadget, you’ll have to login again, but that should hopefully get it working.

  29. Crabman Says:

Mine stopped working for a few days too. It wouldn’t refresh.

I went to the Settings -> Options -> then clicked Reset. After I generated the code and entered information again it worked.

    Hope this helps.

  30. Caz Says:

Hey, is it possible to post a comment bak using the gadget rather then having to open up the real web page to view and post comments bk on status etc…??

  31. The Staff Says:

Caz, that ability is on our list of upgrades for the future. Might not be the very next upgrade, but it should be a part of the one after that.

  32. raphael Says:

why my gadget always ask a new code?? help me please.. i already reinstall it but not change any things.. helppp….

  33. raphael Says:

A name was started with an invalid character. Error processing resource
    (xml file error)

  34. The Staff Says:

Raphael, we’ll look into additional character processing, sometimes non-English or custom characters can cause problems with reading the XML file. This might be why some people have been having problems with their friend feed. As for the code, we’re still looking into that.

  35. collegekid Says:

  36. The Staff Says:

Hi collegekid, We just released an updated version of the Facebook Explorer gadget. Install that and see if you still have the problem. If you do, you should also try restarting the Vista Sidebar application. If that does not work, please let us know. Your feedback is always appreciated.

  37. tom Says:
