I was just curious to see if anyone had any thoughts as to what they would consider the best gadget in the world. It can be one that’s already out there or it can be one that you made up, really I’m just looking to see what people really want out of a gadget.
What would make a gadget the best in the world for you?

The best gadget would be able to read my mind and tell me what I wanted before I even knew.
Just one with your internet explorer favourites and maybe scrollable so your window stays very litle. It would even be better if there was just one visible row, and the rest popup
I want a GPS interface gadget
I would LOVE a gadget that was a combo utility that had all of the following..
– On Left hand side of gadget –
TIME & DATE
NEW E-MAIL ALERT
RUN COMMAND (text window and tiny button to run the command)
SEARCH COMMAND (text window and tiny button to search 1 search engine of your choice)
– In a line down the Right hand side of gadget –
The items from your system tray.
@Fred: After extensive testing on a few lab monkeys we had stashed around (Don’t ask), we tried to read their minds and hook it up to the gadget. We learned some interesting information:
1. Monkeys, electrodes, and high voltage don’t mix.
2. Reading minds via electronic device is still a little ways off in the future.
3. We’re out of monkeys.
Sorry Fred, but you’ll have to wait a little while until science catches up.
@Thomas: Not a bad idea. Just have to figure out how we’re going to get into your IE favorites… We’ll think of something, but that is a workable idea. Might make a pretty handy standalaone gadget or future UE addition.
@Jon: Which GPS? Might be possible in the future, but odds are it’ll have to come from the GPS company or work with some kind of online GPS service.
@Mark: Time & Date, check. New E-Mail alert, doable, though will take some interesting code. Run Command, also doable. Search Command, already done. System Tray, unfortunatly off limits to gadgets, but maybe someday…
I will say that a few of these options will be in the next version of the Ultimate Explorer gadget. In addition to that, we’re in the planning and designing stages of a system gadget that might be right up your alley, though I have quite a bit of work to do on it before it’s good and ready.
@Everyone: Thanks for posting. It’s great to see what people want and are thinking would be great. I only wish we could make it all possible through the existing gadget sidebar, but alas, Microsoft doth control the code. But we will manage as best as we can until then. Thanks again.
Daily dilbert at http://www.innovatewithGadgets.com
@Rajesh: How come? I like Dilbert as much as the next guy, but why is that the best gadget ever? Not putting it down or anything, but I’m curious.
Because Rajesh made the gadget, that’s why
How about a Gadget which has a country drop down list and small button which can effect regime change in chosen nation (after all diplomatic options are fully explored of course). Would also contain a search bar capable of finding buried WMDs. Of course these functions would only operate if sidebar is docked on the right. If docked on the left, the gadget would simply fail to work at all, apart from making sexual advances to other gadgets.
Also, if this gadget is uninstalled completely all other gadgets would immediately descend into civil war.

I also made the Gadget “Soapbox Video Gadget” which was Grand Prize winner @ codeproject.com

I could have said that as the best one , I have also made 10’s of other gadgets, but the actual reason is,
It is the favorite of 1000’s of users all over the world. I recieve emails every day from fans of the gadget.
i was just trying to represent their opinion here.
The best gadget for me would be a more interactive calendar. I like the standard Vista calendar gadget, but it’s too static and I would want to add the following functions:
1. Ability to interface with the standard Windows calendar.
2. Highlight/shade Vista gadget calendar display dates for which some appointment/event exists in the Windows calendar. Color coding of the highlight by entry type would be cool, but maybe too optimistic for now.
3. An advance warning light/button. This would activate when a pre-existing appointment/event was approaching. Ideally, either different colors or 3 different buttons to indicate that the event is upcoming in the next month, next week or next day.
This feature would preclude the need to actually open your calendar regularly to see what, if any, events are upcoming.
I would like to try creating this gadget myself, but I am lacking an advanced degree in Microsoft gadgetology.
Thanks.
Well I was thinking the best gadjet in the world would be the one that did several jobs with minimum resource impact.
1)Multiple (user selective) Drive status and % fill/empty with progress bar real time update stuffs
2)Network usage upload/download with progress bar real time update stuffs
3)CPU usage/ram usage/max process viewer/ % and with progress bar real time update stuffs
4)wifi status/ssid/ip/secure/config with status gfx real time update stuffs
5)rss customizable feed reader like ms but fully configurable
5)sys control
7)world clock both analogue and digital with configurable time servers
All of the above on same mutiple gadjet and able to swich each part on/off independantly of each other but only 1 gadjet for all….
Basically all best gadjets rolled up into 1 and done wih style.
