Posted in Fb Explorer, Gadgets

Fb ExplorerFacebook recently changed their live stream feed structure and threw the gadget off. This patch corrects the attachment checking in the feed so that everything should be working as normal again.

    Hello,

i answer here your reply (http://www.buildagadget.com/Blog/archives/414#comment-14921). I tried 1.07, it works for a few hours, as i see refresh problem was solved. Thank you

I love your FB explorer and I use it daily to check the updates.

There is though one issue that I’d like to see fixed. Me and my wife are both using the same Windows account, thus we only have one desktop, but FB only support one account. :( The only way to get it working for both of us is to use new and old versions of FB Explorer. Any chance that you make FB Explorer support multiple accounts?

Btw, does it work, if I go to C:\Users\Your_Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets and copy-paste folder FbExplorer.gadget to FbExplorer2.gadget to folder?

  3. The Staff Says:

Hi Ergonpandilus, This is one of our most frequently requested items with the FBE gadget. Unfortunately, there is no way right now to have two instances of the gadget running with two separate logins. We plan on looking into this in a future update. However, if you use individual user accounts on the computer, it would allow you to run an individual FBE in each. Otherwise, you would have to log in and out each time. It will not work to use the FbExplorer2 idea you mention. I apologize for the inconvenience and hope we can address this sometime in the near future. Please let us know if you have any other thoughts or suggestions.

  4. Ergonpandilus Says:

    Ok. :(

But at least it now works perfectly with two accounts, when I have different versions of the softare (v1.05 and v1.07).

  5. The Staff Says:

Ergonpandilus, Glad to hear it’s working, though those versions are still reading the configuration info from the same XML file. What you’re seeing is more of a temporary instance of the gadgets on the sidebar.

However, we’ll look into the account manager for the gadget in future updates.

  6. Jared Says:

so the feed issue of 1.06 got fixed in .07, but the gadget is pulling in things from applications that I have blocked from my facebook pages. I dont want to know when there is a new icecream cone pillow for pillow fight or that all fences in farmtown are now blue! I just want my updates that Ive requested to show.

another thing, I like the flyout that I can see the text better, could the pictures be a bit larger, and cou (wish the twitter gadget did that)ld there be next previous buttons on the flyout to go to the higher or lower post in line?

    thank you.

  7. Jared Says:

SORRY, the last paragraph should read:

another thing, I like the flyout that I can see the text better(wish the twitter gadget did that), could the pictures be a bit larger, and cou ld there be next previous buttons on the flyout to go to the higher or lower post in line?

  8. The Staff Says:

Jared, we’re looking into adding in some additional stream options for the friend activity. Unfortunately, Facebook doesn’t set the appropriate content filters to keep out app spam automatically, but we’re looking into it. Larger text size is another thing we’ll try to add in with the next update. Next and previous buttons are something we’ll have to look into.

  9. Ergonpandilus Says:

Well, it’s not temporary. It works even if I reboot the computer. ;)

  10. The Staff Says:

Glad to hear it’s working then. :)

  11. ridzyroo Says:

I don’t know if its just me but every friend activity detail has the words “Posted a link” before everything when there is no link. Hope this can be fixed =)

And the problem that Jared’s facing. I don’t like it either.

    Cheers

  12. The Staff Says:

Ridzyroo, Kinda odd, but lots of times the Facebook API reports back “link” in the message type and the gadget is just reading that in. We’ll take a look at it and see if there’s some sort of problem being generated by the feed structure testing we implemented.

  13. Katie Says:

When I downloaded the FB gadget, it said I needed to click a link to generate the login code. When I clicked it, a popup appeared that read:

    “…://www.facebook.com/code_gen.php?v=1.0&api_key=4dda23fb6934efa47996f7da090acd50 Application Not Found”

What does that mean and how do I fix it?

  14. The Staff Says:

Katie, add an http to the link and you should be able to just copy and paste that into the browser’s address bar to get the code. Full link should look like: http://www.facebook.com/code_gen.php?v=1.0&api_key=4dda23fb6934efa47996f7da090acd50 If it doesn’t work right off the bat, try refreshing a couple times.

  15. Katie Says:

    It worked. Thank you. :)

  16. Alfonso Says:

    Hello,

I was able to login using solution given to Katie. But the other links such as enabling the status updates and messages and pokes are not working. Everytime I try to click them, an error window pops up with an incomplete URL and a message that says ‘Application not found’.

    Help.

  17. The Staff Says:

Alfonso, you should be able to go into the application settings on Facebook.com to enable those. We’ll look into the issue with the links, it’s odd that only a couple people have run into this, but maybe there’s some sort of simple stupid problem with the launch function.

  18. Alfonso Says:

I appreciate your help but I already fixed it. What I needed to do was set an association file for the gadget via the control panel.

    Thanks :)

  19. Marcia Says:

When I was using this gadget on my Vista os it worked great and anytime I clicked on it my home page loaded. Got Windows 7 installed and have added this gadget again but now everytime I click to open it I have to sign in to Facebook. How do I get it to remember the sign in and just go straight to my home page? Love this gadget by the way…

  20. The Staff Says:

Marcia, we’re working on a big update for the Fb Explorer that will have a much improved login system that should hopefully be able to fix this issue.

  21. Josh Says:

I am having a lot of trouble with getting this gadget working. Ever since i installed the app and clicked on the first page of it “1. Click here to generate login code”, when it goes to my facebook page it all just comes up as text on the left hand side of the page. I thought it was just my internet at first but no other page does it. I’ve tried using a different browser too and only facebook does this and because the page does not load properly for me it does not generate the code. Please help (fyi i’m using Windows Vista)

  22. The Staff Says:

Josh, we realize the login system on the gadget sucks and are currently taking steps to rectify it for the next gadget (which we’re still hoping will head into open beta this week, or early next week at the latest). The next version will use Facebook connect and if all goes according to plan, you’ll never have to enter in another code to get it working again.

  23. Josh Says:

Got it to work finally, i might have just been getting a slow facebook server as well which was adding to the problem

  24. AJ Says:

I agree with an earlier post, it’s an awesome tool but I’d rather it only pull the posts from your selected filter rather than everything that flows in from the main news-feed filter. I don’t mind it showing me my friends junk posts from games they are playing, but I would prefer it not show me pots from people who I have filtered out of my home page by use of friends lists. (i.e. On my home page I’m showing posts from a selected friends list, not posts in the news-feed filter which is the default.)

Maybe allow the user to select which of their filters they wish to view? Or just use the same one that facebook uses on your home page.

  25. The Staff Says:

AJ, the new upgrade we’re working on does default filtering of the stream by newsfeed (what you see on your Facebook homepage), in the future we’ll add in more sorts, but for the moment, this should give people a much better experience with the friend activity feed. We’re still hoping to get it into public beta this week, though that will depend on Facebook getting their API scaling issues fixed in a timely manner.

  26. ayen Says:

I downloaded your gadget and then I tried to authenticate it, but nothing happens when I click connect. I dont know how or where to put the code. How do I connect it to my account?

  27. The Staff Says:

Ayen, make sure you have the latest version of the gadget and restart the sidebar just in case that’s causing a problem. When you click connect, it should be able to open up a browser window allowing you to login into Facebook and apply permissions to the app so that when you get through to our site, all you’ll have to do is click next on the gadget to make it work. There are no codes involved that a user has to input aside form their username and password in the process.
