Date And Time 1.0

Posted in Development, Gadget Stuff, News & Updates

We have a new gadget out today, fresh from the half-cubicle way in the back of the dark room, through the pit, and over the hedge maze. Okay, so I exaggerate a bit, but it really is a half cubicle. in any case, please welcome the newest release, the Date And Time gadget. Guess what it does. This handy little gadget works as a replacement for the calendar and or clock gadgets that come with Vista and includes multiple date and time formats as well as a calendar and events system, and an alarm clock. It also comes with all the lovely skins from System Control.

Now, this is still a relatively basic gadget, so as we get suggestions in, we’ll try to add to it in the future.

Features:

  1. Multiple Date & Time Formats
  2. Calendar & Events System
  3. Alarm Clock
  4. Persistent Settings

Nice gadget. I will use it in place of the standard clock.

Here are a few suggestions to make it even more useful/attractive:
    1. How about the ability to draw calendar items from Outlook? If it had this, I could stop using the Outlook gadget.

    2. How about the ability to change font size/color on the date and time?

  2. admin Says:

I had a funny feeling like those would be the first two requests. Lol. Both are noted and we’ll look into it for the future. To be honest, this was an extremely quick gadget (2 Days, new personal record), so it’s definetely open for more.

    Great suggestions! :)

  3. mona Says:

I add an event in the calender, but it does not show??
It says in the List of Events:
File 1/error 0, but where is mye Event?

    The help-page didn’t work either.

  4. dlee Says:

can;t down load the clock and date gadget

  5. admin Says:

Mona, check out the support page for the gadget. Settings->? On the page, there is a set of directions to reset the persistent settings for the gadget. Try that out and see if it works then, it sounds like it’s just not saving the right way.

dlee, try one of the download links? It’s also on Live Gallery now, I’ll update the page here in a sec.

  6. SoftSpot Says:

Tim beat me to it: integration with the Outlook calendar is on top of my wishlist too. That would prevent me from having to enter every appointment more than once and make this nice gadget practically perfect for me. :-)

  7. KENT Says:

    SAME S.H.I.T. :(

  8. Chico Says:

    nice one!
just a few small suggestions though…

1.Event reminder? Maybe at event creation, allow an option to create an alarm for that event to sound at a specific time, which brings me to my next thought….

    2.Multiple alarms

3.and the option to choose your own sound file to play when it goes off.

    4. in the calendar screen, have all days with events to be highlighted a different color to be able to see at a glance which days have been used. Maybe a small number can show how many events there are durring that day.

5.How about an option to have the current month displayed constantly under the time?

keep up the good work by the way.

  9. Steve Says:

I set an alarm, and when it went off, I could not figure out how to turn it off. I finally just closed the gadget… did I overlook something?

  10. admin Says:

Steve, click the gadget where it says “Alarm”.

  11. Brian Says:

Is there a way you guys can add MULTIPLE alarms? instead of just one? I need it sound multiple times

  12. phil Says:

Nice gadget, i use it in preference to the windows clock - can i suggest changing the font size of the time to fit the width of the gadget - it’s not easy to see “at a glance”

    cheers!

  13. Merlin Says:

Love this nice little clock but wish the number and color of font was diff. kind of hard to read. but i love it and use it all the time. thanks keep up the great work.

  14. Eugene Says:

    I have one bug:
    if I use only english in Events - all ok;
if I use unicode (Russian) - Error! - I need erase *.xml with all my events :(
    Fix it, please.

  15. David Says:

I’m also having trouble saving events (File I/O Error). After checking the help page I tried o find the DTData and DTEvents xml files, but was unsuccessful (the pathway on the site didn’t seem to appear on my computer).

  16. The Staff Says:

David, How far down the path can you get on your machine? It may require you to show hidden files and folder to find.

  17. Jacy Says:

Great gadget, just have a minor issue about setting a range of dates for an event.

For an instance, there’s holidays from the 1st to the 5th, I use the date range checkbox.

But somehow, when I do it, the event shows up also on everyday before the date which it is suppose to start, but not after the date which it is suppose to end.

Example: 5th to 10th, anything before the 5th within that month will be marked with the event all the way up until the 10th.

Hope you guys can fix this bug, other than that, is there a way to change the clock time without going into the vista control panel to do it?

  18. Abhishek Says:

How to turn off the alarm ………. it just keeps on ringing …

  19. The Staff Says:

Press the button that says “Alarm”

  20. Tom Allen Says:

DT will not let me add an event that is less than three days from the current date. I am using Windows Vista Ultimate. I have performed the “Top Five things to do”; uninstalled the gadget and reinstalled and the problem persists; and have tried to find the two xml files, but they do not show on a search. Thanks for any help.

  21. sakura Says:

i have looked but could not find, so apologies in advance if this already exists, but could you add functionality for different time zones? i just don’t see the point in having a clock on my sidebar displaying the same time as the one on my taskbar. i downloaded this hoping i could set it to the time zone back home so i could better keep in touch with friends and family…

  22. lord Says:

There is no button to turn off… better to just close it. (Nowhere does it say “alarm”).

Please updade it with a ‘more’ vissible button, or one that can actually be SEEN.

    thanks.

  23. Peter Dzomlija Says:

    Nice gadget.

    I have just three suggestions:

    1) Make an “Analog” version that looks almost like the standard Vista clock gadget

    2) Make the time display more customizable (different fonts, colors, etc)

    3) Allow for different alarm types. In addition to that highly effective bone screeching beping you already have, how about playing a song from the WMP Library?

Other than that, I give 4 out of 5 stars!

  24. Kenni Says:

Hi I just started using this gadget.
    Its very nice.

I had that alarm problem (can’t turn it of) at the first time, after that it turned off after L clicked the “Alarm” text

I would really use some colors in the calendar:)
And to add text to the alarm… in case I forgot why I set up that alarm:)

    Nice work !

  25. D-H Says:

When trying to enter a range event I am advised to ‘use the current date or above’ — I was entering an event for the following week. If I enter an event for a single date, no problem

  26. Rob Says:

I can’t turn the alarm off. When I click on the “alarm” button, as the responses suggest, nothing happens. When I right click on options and click on “clear alarm,” nothing happens. Please help. Thanks.

  27. Amber Says:

I wish to second Sakura’s request. I have friends in multiple time zones, so the ability to set this to another zone so I could see what time it is there at a glance would be extremely helpful. There are gadgets that do that, but none as attractive or user-friendly as this one.

  28. JL Says:

The only way to clear the alarm is to close the gadget. I tried several options and they didn’t work. I’m getting rid of it. It was nice while it last. Thanks

  29. The Staff Says:

JL, we will be getting back to that gadget at some point soon. Just keep an eye out in the coming weeks, we have plans to not only correct the alarm issues, but add a lot more to the gadget and interface.

  30. Nana Says:

the time is not correct, nor is it correct on my laptop

  31. The Staff Says:

Nana, the gadget uses the time from the computer, if you set the date and time the right way on the laptop, the gadget will follow suit.

  32. Nathan Says:

Ya know how at the bottom of the gadget there is the alarm button and calender button? Well, I’m thinking that if you have an alarm or event scheduled for that day there should be something next to those buttons that says something like, “Hey, there’s an event today or alarm or whatever.” That way you won’t forget if you don’t check the calender deal frequently.

  33. Nathan Says:

alright, nevermind, I’m a little retarded, but I have another idea, when you look at the calender, and there is an event on a certain day, that day should be a different color so that you know something is up.

  34. Laura Says:

I was just online hunting for a laptop alarm clock that will start up the laptop and then ply the alarm, as I don’t like to have my laptop on at night but i need an alarm clock and normally the first port of call in the morning is my laptop. This page came up first, i don’t know if its posible to do it with software but if it could be done…

  35. BM Says:

Using Server 2008 64Bit for my development workstation. I know its an ripped Vista 64bit sidebar. But i cant switchj off alarm either. Handy Gadget if could switch off the alarm

  36. Min Says:

When will an update with all these great ideas come out? This gadget is important and I feel like it is being blown off considering there hasn’t been ANY updates since it’s release. There are no good alarm clocks for a computer and you guys seem to have the best opportunity to make a good one that won’t have extra junk come installed with it.

  37. Sandor Says:

I can’t find anyway to turn the alarm off.
Also what’s with the American only format for date?
I live elsewhere in the world & I want day month year format! My system shows this but not this gadget!

  38. pomegranate Says:

it’s a real awesome gadget, has everything i need! thanks to whoever created it!!! :DDD

  39. darc2121 Says:

i really disliked this gadget !!!!
i was writing and the alarm whent off , then i couldnt get it turn off !!! i tried every single 1 of YOUR sujections but none of them worked
I can tell it was only made in 2 days !!!!!!!

  40. Navaronne Says:

Great gadget. I agree with EVERYONE else. make the events a different color on the calendar

  41. The Staff Says:

darc2121, Sorry to hear that, we’re planning on upgrading this gadget at some point in the future with a better alarm clock and calendar.

Navaronne, Thanks for your suggestion, we just added it to the upgrade list.

  42. Rich Says:

Nice, but useless to me unless I can set it to a diff time zone!

  43. Yankeefan810 Says:

I feel like this is a good idea with a poor implementation. Downloaded and installed the gadget 04-Nov-2008. Tried setting alarm for 08:50 PM with the hour entered as ‘08′. Gadget told me I had to enter the hour. Removing the leading zero resolved issue, but leading zeroes shouldn’t cause validation errors. Also, opened calendar and opened December 25, 2008. Told no events for that date. Opened events — saw Hannukah, Christmas eve and Christmas day listed — all with dates in the year *2007*. Holidays should be auto recurring events, but capability doesn’t exist. Dates with events should show in different color or simply with a bold font (better, IMHO). Ability to change font for date/time display and calenday would also be nice. Please add ability to select and play a sample of the alarm sound. Cool feature would be analog clock with (and without!) a second hand with numerous display styles.

  44. redbird10 Says:

Is there any way to change the time and date to another location IE manila, philippines

    thank you for responding

  45. Benerjee Says:

The alarm was not stopping. it was ringing continuosly. How to stop it. I have read all the information above. but nothing works. please tell me how to turnoff.

  46. The Staff Says:

Benerjee, We’re going to have to get that fixed up with the next update to the gadget. Currently, the alarm should stop if you click the big button on the gadget, if that isn’t working, just close the gadget and re-add it and that will clear the current alarm.
