Okay, here we go again. Once more, we have gone over the code and started chucking away stuff that didn’t make sense or just didn’t fit right and replaced a few things with better things and hopefully those things won’t break. Either way, there are a couple of pieces to this update:
Features
With that said, we’re just releasing it so it’ll be on Live Gallery sooner or later, for now, it’s available here and on Widgipedia.

Hey guys nice update with 1.2. I have a suggestion: Is there any way you could display what is playing under each channel in your favorites? Maybe program it to fetch the song every 3 minutes or make it configurable.
Still the same problem. Stuck at “getting info”. This gadget worked for me once. Then it was dead. Tried everything to make it work.
It almost sounds like the login process either didn’t work or your cookies might be messed up. The other possibility is that anti-virus or firewall on your computer has blocked access.
Hmmm… Keep playing with it. Not too much else I can think of except that. I spent all day yesterday dealing with issues similar to this on my computer and it came out working in almost every situation (though sometimes, I had to fiddle with it some to get it working).
I wish there was a more concrete fix for this issue, but at this point, the Ajax in the gadget has been streamlined, which means it’s either computer settings or something going haywire with the cross site Ajax.
I am having an issue with the sound not working. IIt logs in fine and I can see the channels and the songs playing when the channel is selected. I installed another gadget called Ministry of Sound to test as you siggested and I can hear the music stream.
That is really odd. They both use the same code, just a little differently, though that shouldn’t have any effect on hearing it or not. It could be the stream not going through, but that’s odd that you would get the information, but not the stream.
I’m still a bit baffled by this issue, I guess the only thing would be to keep playing with it and see if it works at some point. It’s just a really odd thing.
Makes me wonder if some form of security is at work keeping the player from working… Or maybe it had a buffer error…
Nice update! Just a tip for those that are having the invalid username error, instead of using the username you picked for your xm account, try using the email on your XM account instead. Worked for me, and I felt like a complete moron for not thinking of it earlier.
Thanks for the XM gadget. This is the best I have seen of any type. Keep up the good work!
I uninstalled the version 1.1 gadget, installed the version 1.2 gadget, but now only get the “Getting info” message. I tried various combinations of uninstalling, reinstalling, removing the xml configuration file, all to no avail. Even after uninstalling the 1.2 version and reinstalling the 1.1 version, I still get the “Getting info” message. I have even shut down ZoneAlarm entirely. No change. Very disappointing, as I found the 1.1 gadget very useful…
Following up on my previous post, reinstalled the 1.2 gadget after reboot, and it works! Not sure what the issue might have been — whether something was left running in memory? Anyway, it’s now working well. Thanks for this handy gadget.
I am having an issue with the sound not working. It logs in fine and I can see the channels and the songs playing when the channel is selected. I installed another Sound gadget and I can hear the music stream. (Corrected Email)
Hey i seem to be stuck at the logon screen ive checked and double checked and even changed my password but it says i have the wrong username and password. I don’t understand since its the exact same thing i type to sign in on the website. Any help would be appreciated!
Much more stable and more reliable than the prior version I had installed (whatever that one was!). I had an issue with the getting info when I first started it, but switched to another channel and it worked fine.
Every several minutes, I get periodic pauses in the music, lasting for about 1-2 seconds. The condition seems to worsen slightly the longer I have a stream playing. My PC has an Intel quad-core processor with hardly any load, and I have looked at running processes and never see any correlation between other activity and the sound pauses. My suspicion is that this is a gap in the streaming. Is there any way to increase the amount of buffering to see if this makes a difference?
Interesting. I’m not certain I can increase the buffering on th stream, it’s technically the same as Windows Media Player, so it’s odd that it’s doing that. Have you tried a different stream quality?
Ok… so I have downloaded and installed the XM gadget and dont get any sound… I cant even get any sound with the XM player off the XM website. I have all the settings right in Foxfire and IE7. but still nothing. it seems to load everything fine but I dont get any sound….. any idea’s?
If you’re not getting sound from the gadget as well as the website, then odds are the problem is your system settings and/or a codec.
I know you’ve probably done it, but double-check your sound settings on the system and make sure you’re getting sound everywhere else.
It sounds mostly like a codec problem, but I have no idea which codec is either missing or corrupt.
XM gadget was working great…installed v 1.2 and now problems: get Connection Error when I try to login. Have tried all the suggestions (resetting, checking Internet security option, re-installing, blah blah blah). Gadget is still working fine on my other computer so it’s a mystery. (btw, when you do the reset thing in version 1.2, clicking OK has no effect. Won’t close. Have to use Cancel. )
Oops. Forgot to try the old standby of rebooting the computer. Everything’s fine now. Lovely gadget!
Channel lineup update. Shouldnt that be automatic?
Good update though.
I’m stuck on “Getting info…”, too. I installed this gadget last night and it worked perfectly until I added my fifth favorite channel. From that point on it would not select a different channel. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and am now getting the Getting info… problem.
I had to uninstall and re-install it to get it to work after a reboot. I tried to shut it down and the re-open it,no good. Reset default info, cleared the channels, still no good. Only thing left was to remove it then add it again. So far, it’s working OK!
So, I decided to to try this gadget from XM and I get a free three day trial…so far it has worked for less than a minute and I’ve already used up a day.
I’ve tried doing the things suggested in the online support manual but no luck…
The gadge just has “Getting Info” displayed with the station I chose…I tried using a different station and it locks up. I hope to get this to work before my trial ends…As of right now, I would not pay a dime for this service…. It would be nice to get this to work, I would enjoy it.
@Dana: I have no idea why that would happen, have you tried resetting the favorites list to see if it keeps happening?
@Theresa: Hmmm… Did it actually get a station at one point or have you had the “Getting Info” problem since you installed? I noticed that my copy stopped working a few minutes ago, sometimes the XM server gets loaded down and third party apps get screwed from it. I would try it again in a few hours, see if it’s working then, maybe play around a little with it (the gadget can be a bit finicky sometimes), if all else fails, uninstall/reinstall the whole thing, XML files as well and see if that helps.
just found this gadget. all i can say is YES!!!
software developer to software developer here are my suggestions
1) when stopped, remove the elipsis
Just have it say “Stopped” no “…” afterwords
2) add a mute button. sometimes i need to quickly mute at work when listening to O&A in the morning. don’t need to break the connection. just want a quick mute.
great gadget. this is what sidebar gadgets SHOULD be. great job!
I installed the gadget to my computer and everytime i try to login it says: invalid username/password.
I signed up online and even have xm in my truck. why does it keep saying this? how can i fix it?
Try logging in through the website itself and use the online player, just to check that it works. XM requires that accounts activate the online player seperately for some reason. That might be the cause of the issue.
The sound does not work. It did… then suddenly stopped 2 days ago. I have checked all the obvious things… sound is up on the gadget, sound is up on my computer, nothing is muted. I can hear other music, and other sounds. I can see the feed… all the titles, artists, albums, etc. I uninstalled the previous version (I don’t know which it was, but it’s the one that DID work), and then installed version 1.4. I’ve rebooted. I’ve done everything I can think of! What can i do that I am NOT thinking of???
Hmmm… Short of deleting the persistent settings files, I’m not certain. If the sound stopped suddenly 2 days ago, then there’s a possibility it may not even be the gadget. did you install any software, codecs, or utilities around that time?
nope… no new installations of any sort. As a matter of fact, it was playing fine, I put my computer into “sleep” mode for about half an hour (a common thing for me) and when I returned it would not give me sound… and hasn’t since.
What do you mean by deleting persistent settings files?
I have thought of one other detail that may or may not mean anything. Whenever I would bring my computer out of sleep, or do a full reboot, I could see the feed on the gadget but it wouldn’t play until I hit “stop” and then hit “play” again. I have obviously tried that … repeatedly … and that no longer helps.
The files are the XML settings for the gadget. Though at this point, I’m not sure deleting those will help, but try it anyways, there are directions on the XM support page.
Also, let me get this straight, the gadget is degrading in functionality over time? Have you looked into your Windows Media Player? The gadget draws off that to play the stream, so if something has happened to your media player, the gadget is going to break from that.
Otherwise, it’s a rather odd issue to be having “all of the sudden”. Even odder when you consider that the gadget is just HTML / CSS / Javascript, and now it sounds liike it’s being attacked by a virus or something.
My windows media player is just fine… sound, everything works on it. You have NO other ideas?? Am I the only one with this issue?
We’re trying to figure something else to try out. Hmmm… If you’ve deleted the persistent settings files, check that same directory for an XMDebug.txt file, open it if it’s there and comment it here.
Other than that, try turning on script debugging in Internet Explorer and see if you get any kind of error when you operate the gadget.
Other than that, this is just a really odd problem. It could be a number of different things, but narrowing it down is difficult without seeing the machine.
