XM Online Radio 1.3

Posted in Development, Gadget Stuff, News & Updates

After extensive listening, it was determined that this gadget wasn’t badass enough.  Therefore, we have made provisions.  The backend has had some more revisions made to it for stability but mainly for speed.  The “Getting Info” issue should more or less be resolved for the majority of users.

There is a small addendum for that though:  Because of the way XM updates it’s feeds, if you see the wrong artist list on the currently playing song, it’s actually for the next track and the current track has less than 20 seconds left.  Kind of odd right at the start, but we figure better the regular feed than waiting 10 seconds into the next song to figure out who’s playing.

Here’s a List of Features:

  • Better Info Feed For What’s Playing
  • Speed Increases Due To Aforementioned Feed
  • Mute Button
  • Channel Preview (”Song List” Button, Go Ahead And Press That)
  • If You Click The Artist, You Can Now Search For Them On Wikipedia, Yahoo, Amazon, and eBay

Overall, it’s a pretty decent update.  Have at it and let us know if there’s any major issues.  :)

Loved the tool, but I get a file I/O Error now, and it won’t work. I’ll re-boot to see if it fixes the issue, but thought you guys may want to look into possible causes.

  2. Bob Says:

This new version looks awesome and so far works much faster!! Love the new mute and song list buttons. Thanks for the update!

  3. admin Says:

Jay, let me know if that works. I noticed that rebooting helped some people last time transitioning from one version to the other.

It’s weird, but I think I ran into something similar when I put the mute button in.

  4. Shini Says:

Looks good…thanks for providing this upgrade. I just installed it today. I like the Mute button. However, I wished that the new version would have kept my list of Favorites from the previous version. I had to add them again.

  5. admin Says:

Yeah, the version transisitioning on this gadget is a little off. Not sure why it would have deleted your favorites though… Hmmm…

  6. Tammy Says:

I’m having troubles also with a File I/O Error. I’ve uninstalled it, rebooted and reinstalled and still get the message. Any ideas because I love having easy access to XM Radio. Thanks.

  7. admin Says:

Try deleting the XML files in the gadget directory. There are instructions on the support page. Make sure you delete both XM files.

Let us know if that doesn’t work.

  8. Tammy Says:

Hi again! I deleted the file, uninstalled and rebooted, then reinstalled XM. I’m still getting the File I/O Error message. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

  9. admin Says:

Tammy, we just did a quick update of the 1.3 gadget (kind of a stealth update as there’s only a couple minor things changed), I’d like you download that and give a try, reboot after install and all that.

The problem your having is with the persistent settings, I’m not 100% sure why it’s giving you the error, but 9 times out of 10 deleting the file will work, the other time seems to be security related on the computer.

  10. Geoff Says:

Any chance you could add the album title to the info display? Oh, and a link to one of the lyrics sites up there with the Amazon, eBay, Tickets, etc. links would be cool too! (I know, it doesn’t generate revenue, but it would still be cool…)

  11. admin Says:

I’ll look into the album title (spacing is going to be tight), and I was actually just thinking about a lyrics site this morning, so there’s good odds it’ll make it’s way into the next update somewhere.

  12. Prime Says:

Thanks for the hard work, and great gadget folks!!!

I do have a problem, though:

I’ve been a user since 1.0. I’ve upgraded through the ranks without any issue, until I hit version 1.3.

I am one of the users with the “No Sound” issue. All system sounds and alternate media player sounds come through just fine. I was even listening to this XM gadget immediately before upgrading.

I’ve deleted my XML files, re-installed the gadget, and re-booted several times to no avail. Just thought y’all would like to know.

Otherwise, it’s a fantastic gadget. Thanks for the hard work!

  13. admin Says:

Interesting. Prime, did the play button press down in the gadget? If it did, this is a really wierd issue, if it didn’t, it means that the Ajax isn’t getting through.

Hmm… Ummm… I’m really not certain what would cause this besides a bad connection to the server or a security issue with Windows Media player… I’ll keep looking into it. We fiddled with the feeds for 1.3, so maybe that’s part of it.

  14. admin Says:

Also, have you done anything with audio codecs in between versions? This could be caused by codecs gone crazy. Just a thought, we’re researching player info.

  15. Geoff Says:

Thanks for considering adding the title and lyrics site links! One other quick request: Any chance you could add tooltips to the artist/title text so that there’s a way to see full names that don’t fit in the window?

    Thanks for a great gadget!

  16. Eric P. Says:

I guess I’m one of the lucky ones… No problems moving to this Gadget from the previous version. Every feature works just fine, and my favorites were fully preserved. I did close the old gadget first, then I uninstalled it, then installed the new one. Worked flawlessly.

The song title feature is quite, quite nice. So nice, in fact, that I wish there was a way to just make it fetch that info all the time in the channel list as opposed to have to press “Songs” each time I enter the channel list.

I do still have to stop/start/stop/start after longs periods of being off to make it re-establish connection to the XM stream, but that’s hardly a complaint since it happens so fast.

Excellent job, guys. I’d definitely give you a 20% tip on this job well done!

  17. Seabert Says:

for the no sound issue, try clicking on play multiple times, that seems to fix it. hopefully that bug will get fixed soon.

i too like the tooltips idea so cut off names of songs and singers will show fully.

  18. admin Says:

The double play issue is getting resolved for version 1.4 There will be a few new things in that as well. As for the song list being automatic, it’s possible, but would also slow the flyout down quite a bit when you pop it out, and sometimes you just want to change the channel quickly.

Otherwise, there’s a few more things we’ll be adding in to the next version that we think people will like. Still working on it though, so it’ll take a bit to get it ready for release. :)

  19. Ben Sowle Says:

This gadget is my most used gadget! Listening at work is very nice!!! One suggestion, after hours I crank it up and that is great, during the day I have to keep my volume high for my computer to listen to incoming voicemails, since the volume adjustment goes in increments of 10 I am constantly turning my system volume up and down. I know you do that to make volume adjust emnt easy, but for people who need to adjust the quiet end lower, it would be nice to have 1% increments for 0 - 9. Again, LOVE THE GADGET!!! THANK YOU!

  20. sup191 Says:

I can’t thank you enough for making this gadget. It’s incredible. I can’t believe it took me so long to discover it!

I only have one suggestion. I don’t usually have a problem unless I’m downloading, but is it possible to stick in a buffering system? Maybe something selectable like 5-30 seconds? During heavy downloading, it skips and stutters a bit. Other than that, it’s pretty flawless for me.

    Keep up the nice work!

  21. sup191 Says:

Ok, you can pretty much scratch that last entry. After a reboot, I’m having no issues with the hi quality stream. A buffering system might still be nice, but possibly not necessary. Also, it wouldn’t be worth it if it took up too much RAM.

    Again, great work!

  22. Prime Says:

Sorry its taken so long to reply…

To your question of depressing the play button: Your solution has worked!

The play button seems to be “un-pressing” itself, so I had to click multiple times to get it to stay in an on position.

I hadn’t done anything to my available audio codecs, to rule that one out while we’re at it.

I’ve yet to restart my system for thorough testing, but I’ll get back to you later tonight after I’ve restarted several times and used my system under normal conditions, to make sure nothing else I’m doing is affecting the player.

Thanks for your reply. The gadget RAWKS!

  23. admin Says:

Prime, if it was the play button, there is a fix we’ll be testing out for the next version of the gadget and will hopefully have that version out either later this week or early to mid next week. :)

  24. Sean Says:

Nice gadget. Tiny issue, the user name box accepts tabs now… so when you enter your name and hit tab, instead of going to the password box it puts a tab in the user name box.

    Sean

  25. Sean Says:

I seem to be having the same issue as w/ the prior version as well where I need to reset all on reboot to login. Also, it can take up to 3x of entering my credentials before it works.

Is the source available for this gadget? I’d be willing to debug it since I consistently have the issue.

    Sean

  26. The Staff Says:

Sean, the source is available for both the Vista and Google XM gadgets. You can usually extract it by downloading the gadget to the desktop and renaming the file as a .zip. We appreciate any debugging info you come up with. :)
